Dear Midlife Cafe Community,
I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you for joining us at our second Midlife Cafe gathering on May 10th, 2024. Your presence and engagement made the event truly special.
Midlife Cafe is more than just a meeting—it's a space where women navigating the complexities of the second half of life come together to support, learn, and grow. Your participation enriches our shared journey, and we're truly grateful for your engagement.
As we continue to explore diverse themes related to life and well-being, your valuable contributions and insights help shape the direction of our gatherings. Your willingness to share expertise, exchange experiences, and offer mutual support embodies the spirit of community that defines Midlife Cafe.
We're excited to announce that our next Midlife Cafe will take place on May 31st (the meeting is being rescheduled from May 24). Remember to mark your calendars and register on Eventbrite (note: as of 2025 registration is processed through my website) to secure your spot, as spaces are limited.
During our meeting on May 10, we delved into insightful discussions and explored valuable resources. Here's a brief recap of what we covered:
Resources Shared:
EMDR Therapy: Discussed a therapy for trauma processing. EMDR Therapy involves a structured approach where the individual is guided to briefly concentrate on the traumatic memory while simultaneously undergoing bilateral stimulation, often through eye movements. This process is aimed at reducing the intensity of the trauma memory's vividness and emotional impact.
Bio-Identical Hormones: Discussed the use of bio-identical hormones in managing hormonal changes. Bioidentical hormones are different from those used in traditional hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in that they're identical chemically to those our bodies produce naturally. Most bioidentical hormones are made from wild yam. The hormones used in traditional HRT (non-bioidentical hormones) are made from the urine of pregnant horses and other non-bioidentical hormones where the DNA structure is similar but not identical.
Insight Timer: Explored the Insight Timer meditation app as a tool for mindfulness and relaxation. https://insighttimer.com/
Group Insights and Future Directions:
Open Conversations: We emphasize the value of open conversations where no one is right or wrong.
Listening Partnerships: We highlighted the importance of holding space for one another. We may explore supportive listening partnerships in the coming sessions.
Looking Ahead:
Next Meeting Flexible Agenda:
Community Building: Creating a supportive community where we can study, network, and uplift each other.
Trusted Information: Building a repository of expertise and referrals of doctors specializing in menopause.
Knowledge Sharing: Continuing to share knowledge, resources, and experiences to support each other.
Discussion Topics: We invite your input on what topics you would like to explore in our next meeting.
20 min expert talks scheduling, beginning with our members who want to share their knowledge and expertise.
Meeting Schedule: Discuss the possibility of meeting on a Friday or Thursday evening once a month or every two months as people working full time can’t join us if we are meeting in the morning.Â
Man Perspective: Explored the idea of providing similar support opportunities for men navigating midlife. (This may be led by a man or group of men) please reach out if your husband, brother, or any man in your circle would benefit from these sessions
Action Items:
Takeaway: Practice breathing or meditation to promote relaxation and mindfulness.
Reflection: Reflect on two things we learned or how we felt during our gathering. We may implement these two steps as the opening and closing of the gathering, respectively.
