Our most recent Midlife Café gathering was filled with insightful conversations and valuable feedback from the community. Here’s a recap of the key takeaways:

Meeting Format:
We agreed that our current structure, which begins with a grounding meditation followed by introductions, works well. Moving forward, we’ll either continue with open conversations (timed to ensure everyone has a chance to participate) or feature a guest speaker to deepen our discussions.

Speaker Compensation & Feedback:
A thoughtful discussion arose around compensating our guest speakers. After considering various perspectives, we collectively decided:

  • Speakers from within the group will share their expertise voluntarily.
  • Speakers from outside the group may receive compensation if they request it, and the group agrees collectively to contribute.

Thus far, all expert talks have been free, as our speakers have either been group members or found it beneficial to offer their services at no cost for the exposure.

Feedback Surveys for Speakers:
To improve our sessions, we’ll be implementing feedback surveys after each speaker presentation. These surveys will allow members to share anonymous thoughts and experiences, benefiting both the speaker and the group as we shape future discussions.

Serving Our Community Better:
Our meeting also focused on how to make the most of our time together. The group provided excellent suggestions, such as:

  • Setting expectations for what members hope to gain from each session.
  • Planning themes in advance so members can decide if a particular topic resonates with them.
  • Hosting a themed meeting one week, followed by a more open community-sharing session the next.

Carol Bilek’s Contributions:
A special thanks goes to Carol Bilek, our Chi Walking instructor, for her thoughtful input during the meeting. If you’re interested in learning more about Carol’s work, you can check out her resources below:

Private Experiences & Support:
Many members shared personal experiences, and we found that the collective wisdom of the group continues to offer guidance to those facing similar challenges. This supportive environment is truly one of the most powerful aspects of the Midlife Café community.

A Few Phrases to Reflect On:
Here are some takeaways that may resonate with you:

  • Remember to ask for help.
  • You don’t have to, and can't, fix others' lives.
  • Be compassionate to others, but also to yourself.

Thank you for being a part of this incredible community. I look forward to seeing everyone at our next gathering on Friday, September 27!
